MA Narrative Environments students were filmed for Albanian television (above), after their project to rethink the country’s capital Tirana caught the attention of national media.

For the project, students thought of ways to raise the city of Tirana’s profile on the world stage. They worked in small multi-disciplinary teams, investigating the history, the people and the place. The aim was not to ‘solve’ political or social problems, but to find ways of activating and communicating the assets of the city through new narratives.

The students evolved strategic development plans and design interventions. These showed Tirana in several different ways:

  • as a fertile ground for architectural experimentation
  • as a city of play
  • as a pioneer in recycling
  • as the birthplace of a new concept of China town.
