December was a good month for MA Fashion alumnus, with David Koma appointed to Mugler and Helen Lawrence joining Fashion East.

David Koma

David Koma will take up the role of artistic director of Thierry Mugler’s ready-to-wear women’s collections. His first collection for the house will be presented in June 2014, with a runway show to follow in September 2014.

Georgian-born Koma showed his first collection aged 15. He moved to London in 2003, where he studied both BA and MA Fashion at Central Saint Martins. He graduated with a distinction in 2009.

Speaking about his appointment, Koma said: “I am deeply honored to take up the role of Artistic Director at Mugler – a house for which I have the utmost admiration and respect. For me, Mugler is the most extraordinary fashion house with an undeniably audacious heritage.”

Helen Lawrence

Meanwhile, Helen Lawrence has joined Fashion East – an initiative to nurture emerging young designers.

Lawrence, who says her signatures are “handmade knits, PVC scribble embroideries, and wobbly shapes”, graduated from MA Fashion in 2012. She has worked with Craig Green, Mark Fast and Alexander McQueen.

Along with fellow Fashion East designers Louisa Alsop and Ashley Williams, Lawrence will be showing at London Fashion Week 2014 in February.
