Congratulations to our postgraduate art students who managed to raise an incredible amount of money in last week’s eighth annual Art Auction. Artist donations included Antony Gormley, Mona Hatoum, and Isaac Julien as well as our own postgraduate students.
The evening began with a chance to view all the artwork for sale and to start bidding in the silent auction. With a glass in hand and an introduction from Alex Schady, CSM’s Fine Art Programme Leader, the proceedings were well underway.
Then it was on to the live auction. This year we were once again joined by auctioneer Adrian Biddell, Sotheby’s Head of European Painting, who conducted the live auction with tensions running high between bidders. Antony Gormley’s ‘Way’ went for a fantastic £6,500 and Paula Rego’s ‘Crow’ sold for £4,000. The final lot was Roderick Laperdrix’s ‘Otter Board’, a graduate from Central Saint Martins earlier this year, whose donation sold for an impressive £3,000.
There was a final half an hour for bids to be placed in the silent auction. Bidders swarmed to their favourite pieces, and when the five minute warning was given pens raced down the bidding sheets. Second year postgraduate students of Fine Art, Art and Science, and Photography watched eagerly.
The auction was a complete success for all those involved. The funds raised during the evening will be incredibly valuable in assisting our postgraduate students in their final studies. Thank you to all who helped in this year’s Art Auction, our sponsors Daniel Ford International, and particularly to the artists and students for their generous donations.
