Earlier this year, a small group of CSM illustrators were invited to attend a ‘Show & Tell’ at Prestel Publishing’s UK headquarters in Marylebone.

The trip followed a contribution to the ‘Illustration Practitioner Talk Series’ at CSM by children’s illustrator and author Britta Teckentrup, who is an alum of the College. The students were invited by Emma Cook, Publicity and Marketing Executive at Prestel.

Each student talked through their PDF of publishing-oriented illustration work, which they had developed at College, and received individual feedback from Prestel Managing Director Andrew Hansen and Prestel Munich Editor and Author Doris Kutchsbach. Their comments ranged from market size and intended audience, conceptual development, and appropriate international publishing houses.

We have a few of these PDFs to share, take a look via the embed below.

“The big message for the students was to shape what you do to a ‘real market’, rather than just having a ‘good idea’ and hoping it will sell, ” said Andrew Hall, CSM Subject & Route Leader, Illustration of the trip. “After a final round up of sound advice by Andrew and Doris, we agreed that it would be great to develop the event further next year.”
