Leading advanced creative and critical inquiry

PhD study at CSM

Central Saint Martins is home to a dynamic community of more than 120 doctoral researchers. Their projects span art and design, performance, spatial studies, media, the humanities and intersecting fields in science, social science, politics and computing.

Over the past decade our postgraduate research student body has grown steadily. Practice-based research is a particular strength at Central Saint Martins, complemented by pioneering work in history, theory and cultural studies; bringing critical rigour and creative innovation into productive dialogue.

With a faculty that includes internationally recognised scholars and practitioners, Central Saint Martins is a highly sought-after destination for PhD study. We offer doctoral study through 3 routes:

  • a history and theory-focused PhD.
  • a practice-based PhD.
  • a PhD by published work.

Our scholars collaborate across arts and industry, with partners including Victoria and Albert Museum, National Portrait Gallery, National Youth Theatre, National Theatre Archive, Mosaic Rooms and Gucci.
