Biography

Paulo was born and raised in Brazil and graduated from MA Industrial Design in 2012.

After graduation

I've been developing my Masters project - Repair Is Beautiful. I received good attention from press and for exhibitions. For example, Frame Magazine published an image of my work on the cover of its November 2012 edition.

I also participated in a few exhibitions, particularly a big one called Collect in May 2013 at the Saatchi Gallery organised by the Crafts Council. After that I was working for commission - I'm currently working on one for Central Saint Martins which is opening during London Design Festival. Head of College Jeremy Till approached me after seeing my original project, Repair Is Beautiful.

We talked about his research on scarcity and as a result he invited me to design the meeting room for the College. Jeremy gave me the theme and then it was up to me how to interpret it. He trusted my design approach and wanted to see what I could do. Apart from the whole interior design I proposed to make a short video documenting the design process and present it during an exhibition to tell the story and the thinking behind the commission. It's called The Scarcity Project London.

CSM

What I liked very much about my experience at Central Saint Martins was that the thinking and way of working - tutors questioned me all the time, they were inquisitive, they challenged me to think more laterally. The thinking process at CSM is really good.

Advice

You need to be prepared to be challenged. It's best to have worked before, to have some professional experience before you do your masters. It's not necessarily about your age, it's about your attitude - you'll get more from the experience at CSM if you're mature in your approach.
