I am an artist and hold a PhD from Central Saints Martins (2014). The premise of my thesis was that the ‘view’ is a historicised and contemporary socio-political mediation that shapes and positions how we relate as citizens societally and to public space.
I have taught for a number of years at various universities across a range of photographic and fine art courses, including Northumbria University, and London South Bank University. I have held research fellowships at The British School at Rome, Oxford University, University of Western Sydney, University of Dundee, and undertaken artists’ residencies at the Banff Center, Canada, and ACME, London. My teaching and research methodologies are shaped and informed from an approach of interdisciplinary research that draws on contemporary arts practice, visual culture, photography, politics, geography, urban regeneration, and architecture. Key to my methodology is a critical enquiry and positioning ‘of and within’ lived social space.
As a non-studio based practitioner working in a variety of media, I engage with the [art] practice of site-specificity and interdisciplinarity as contexts for and as research. The politics of power and its relationship (symbolic or active) to the urban/land/scapes are at the core of my practice. My projects are exhibited nationally and internationally, and have been included in exhibitions at Tate Britain, ZKM Center for Art & Media, Karlsruhe, International Adelaide Festival, the International Rome Film Festival, and Kate MacGarry, London. I speak regularly at conferences, most recently at Tate Liverpool, Tallin University, Estonia, and Freie Universität, Berlin, and have written a book chapter contribution for the publication Regenerating Culture and Society: Architecture, Art and Urban Style Within the Global Politics of City-Branding (Liverpool University Press/Tate Liverpool Critical Forum, 2011)
