Biography

I am a critical comics studies researcher and lecturer in contextual studies at LCC. My research tends to involve social justice agendas and politics of representation in popular culture, particularly comics and graphic novels. I am also interested in questions of cultural value, and in the transnational, entrepreneurial and precarious networks of creative producers. A founding member of the Comics Research Hub @UAL and PhD supervisor, I regularly peer review for academic journals and publishers and have presented at conferences in the UK and internationally. My monograph Documentary Comics: graphic truth-telling in a skeptical age (2016) was published by Palgrave and I am the co-editor of Contexts of Violence in Comics and Representing Acts of Violence in Comics (both by Routledge, 2019). In more recent work I examine comics telling refugee stories.
