Before moving to London to study on MA Design; Ceramics, Fauzy Kamal had worked designing ceramics in Indonesia for five years.

He has been involved in a variety of projects ranging from making ceramic tiles for heritage building conservation projects in Indonesia and Malaysia to working with artisans from villages in Java and Bali and he has a team of the best local craftmen working with him at Kandura Keramik. During his time in London Fauzy did a work placement with Studio Levien, one of London’s key Ceramic Design studios and was also involved in the 2011 Vogue + CSM Bond St ‘Street lights’ project, designing for Hermes’ store a jewellery display.

‘Archipelago’. Fauzy’s MA project is a set of tableware design based on the relationship between Indonesian cuisine and the compilation of tableware objects it uses in its casual eateries. The tablewares used in such eateries have themselves influenced the direction that styles and practice of cooking and customer consumption patterns have taken on Indonesia’s streets. Apart from eating, the original bowls, saucers have been used as in portioning, a rationing tool to help in cooking and in food preparation. It is a tradition that has been handed down through re-enactments and the spoken language. Through the design project he acknowledges the compiled objects as a de facto tableware set and takes this further by remaking them as a ‘designed set’ exposing their incongruent qualities of contrasting colours, material and archetypes as part of the collection design. Fauzy offers special thanks to David Queensberry, Studio Levien, and Kandura Keramik.

Since graduating from MA Design; Ceramics, Fauzy has returned to Bandung, Indonesia where he drives forward Kandura Keramik, the ceramics company he co-founded and where he is now chief designer. He is also engaged in a number of design initiatives across Java prompting Monocle magazine to highlight him as a key player in their Bandung report of 2013.
