Biography

I am a lecturer in Cultural Studies for Jewellery, Textiles and Fashion students at Central Saint Martins.

My most recent book 'George Eliot and the Gothic Novel: Genres, gender, feeling' (University of Wales Press, 2013) systematically explores George Eliot’s relationship to Gothic genres. A literary and cultural study, it considers the ways in which the author’s secular humanist ethics are linked to the popular story-telling strategies of the mid-Victorian period.

My next book-length project, currently in progress, is a cultural and literary study of the Victorian body and fashion cultures in mid-19th century fiction and print media. It advances my work on the ‘silver-fork school’ of fiction as a ‘materialist’ genre problematically invested in representing social, embodied and sexual dissidence.
