I am a doctoral candidate at Birkbeck, University of London, researching a thesis titled ‘Contamination and classification: first offenders in English convict prisons before 1914’. In addition to penal theory, policy and practice, my research interests include Victorian science fiction, seaside resorts, graphic satire, social housing, community broadcasting, psychogeography, and the end of the world.
I am co-author of Cop Shows: A Critical History of Police Dramas on Television (McFarland, 2015) and the author of a chapter in Sean Brady & Mark Seymour (eds.) Same-Sex Relationships in History: International Perspectives (Bloomsbury Academic, forthcoming). I teach various aspects of cultural theory and modern cultural history, as well as methods and sources for historical research and the use of visual sources by historians.
