Biography

Dr Sian Rees is a UK based scholar and performance-maker specialising in interdisciplinary performance and Practice as Research projects relating to staging forms of artistic dissent. She is the subject leader for MA Performance: Theatre Making and MA Performance: Politics & Social Justice.

Her research interrogates the efficacy of designing, participating, and staging forms of theatrical dissent in public spaces. She is experienced in experimenting with different models of ensemble collaboration, as well as generating material from objects, autobiographical materials, movement, and text. She is currently working on developing a monograph regarding protest and performance, and is developing her practical work in audio performance.

She has varied industry experience, having worked as a performer, theatre-maker, director, and dramaturg. She has experience in political performance, new writing projects, site-specific works, immersive performance, and digital artworks.

Since completing her AHRC funded Practice as Research PhD at Goldsmiths College, she has shared, refined, reconfigured, and continued developing Practice as Research methodologies directly with students for their performance work. She embeds play, curiosity, rigour, challenge, and experiment within her pedagogical approach, and this is critical in her teaching practice.
