The application to Foundation or BA courses can be a difficult process, however with this course you will gain help to prepare your portfolio and get ready for interviews. You will produce work and get expert advice on portfolio content and presentation regardless of your experience or ability.

You will be expected to produce work for your portfolio during class time as well as completing work in your spare time.

Students planning to apply to Foundation or BA courses in Art & Design or in Fine Art

What should you expect?

The aim of the course is to inform students about the application process to Foundation or BA courses in Art & Design / Fine Art.
This cover information on key dates, writing the personal statement, development of new ideas and skills through a variety of workshops ( life drawing, still life, layered linocut, monoprint, collage). The course focus is to encourage experimentation and idea development.

  • Group discussions
  • Gallery visit

It is recommended to students to prepare potential portfolio materials or ideas for future artwork and bring them in on an allocated day. The timetable for these individual tutorials will be agreed on the first day of the course.

Tutor Description

Renata Hegyi is a graduate of Byam Shaw School of Art and Royal Academy Schools, and is now a practising artist and an associate lecturer. She won the St. James Award and Residency in 2003.

Her work has been shown in various curated exhibitions both in the UK and internationally, including the Guildhall Art Gallery, London; National Museum - The Four Dome Pavilion, Wrocław; Konsthallen-Bohusläns Museum, Sweden; Hå Gamle Prestegard, Norway; Sadler's Wells, London; Gimpel Fils, London; Vienna Biennale; Hungarian Cultural Centre, London; Stephen Lawrence Gallery, London; Shine Gallery, London; Hirschl Contemporary Art, London; Armory Photography Art Fair 02, New York. Photographers Gallery, London.



Please bring with you to the first session:

A sketchbook (either A4 or A3 size), pencil and pen

During the course, you will need: 

  • Sketchbook (either A3 or A4 )
  • Masking tape
  • Eraser
  • Glue stick
  • Multi-surface wipes
  • Pencil: 2B or 4B
  • Charcoal (optional)
  • Watercolour paint (optional)
  • Fine paint brushes (size: 04 and size 8) for ink and watercolour paintings ( optional)
  • Scissors (optional)

A1 size paper is provided, as well as various art materials.
