Each year our BA Costume for Theatre and Screen graduates produce a mesmerising collection of costume designs – this year is no different.

Here, Anna Lienbacher, Frank Lin, Tillie Wang and Zofia Kuzma share their UAL Graduate Showcase 2021 submissions.

Elektra Project

My project revolved around the opera Elektra by Richard Strauss with special focus on the character of Klytämnestra.

I based my concept on the psychological aspects of the opera and the aesthetics of the artist Gustav Klimt, who addressed psychological processes in his paintings. Playing with geometric shapes and surface structure was especially important to transport Klimt’s aesthetic.

Elektra Opera Orest Armour Design

I have used a lion as Elektra's family symbol. You can find the lion design everywhere in this costume: in the helmet, sandals, shield, necklace, and the garment itself.

I had never worked with leather before, and no one at Wimbledon had experience with making armour either. I decided to take a leather course outside of uni and through my research I found Damon, a leather armour designer and maker. I asked Damon if I could take the course with him, and he says yes, then asked me what did I want to learn?

I answered “everything!”

Tillie Wang

Costume design for A Midsummer Night's Dream

Bottom, an Athenian resident, and weaver by trade, is famously known for getting his head transformed into a donkey’s head by Puck. In the script, originally these characters do not require a specific design on costume since they only serve a humoristic theatrical purpose.

Nevertheless, I got intrigued by their astonishing positive attitude with the fact that they belong to the lowest class of society, the true representatives of the real world, the motivation of my design.

Zofia Kuzma

1745-50 Gown in pleather with PVC details

I designed a gown based on 1745-50 garment from Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion 1. The dress is made of pleather with floral motifs placed on using silk screen printing method and metallic silver binder. The details of the dress, such as bows and ruffles, are made of different PVC materials, one of them with lace design printed onto it to create a lace effect for the cuffs.
