Biography

Mike Kann is a designer, researcher and educator interested in design’s unique disciplinary approach, engaging with wicked problems, and negotiating complexity through participatory design and the values this can uncover. He is particularly interested in the design and consequences of systems, physical/digital products, and technology on daily practices.

He is Senior Lecturer and Creative Producer on the MA Global Collaborative Design Practice at Camberwell College of Arts. Prior to this, he was Senior Lecturer and Industrial Design BA Course Leader at Brunel University London’s Design School. He has commercial experience in product, furniture and installation design and delivery through freelance roles at practices including Moritz Waldemeyer, Troika, rAndom International, and Conrad Shawcross Studios.

He holds a PhD from the Royal College of Art, which focused on contextualising the Internet of Things within the domestic space through Practice-Oriented and Values Led Participatory Design to uncover the values / virtues that constitute the meshwork of home, people and the IoT through a ‘More-Than-Human’ centric lens. His research interests include Design Pedagogy, Humanising / More-Than-Humanising technology and the application of Participatory and Practice-Oriented Design.
