Biography

Juxtaposition, is a method long embedded in Blightman’s making process, and the integrity of the images it places and how it can work against the fragmentation of disparate elements and personal circumstances, allowing the audience to forge their own connections and inferences. Her artworks refuse a prescribed formula and use several different strategies, not assigning more value to any one medium, nor to what is depicted. Everything exists simultaneously. Blightman’s practice is also situated in ‘time’. She is curious of retaining the idea of process, how light moves through a painting, like it might a film, or performance, and how a painting performs in situ over the time of an exhibition.

Blightman’s PhD by Practice juxtaposes her own artworks with ten other artists in different rooms of the home. It examines the different approaches to making work, considering what materialises when art is made in a domestic environment, where other factors filter in. The research reconsiders and juxtaposes numerous feminist readings in writing and making, re-evaluating artworks made from the early twentieth century to the present day. Her method of juxtaposition provides a new feminist lens with which to examine artworks and allows different life experiences to coexist next to each other. It offers alternative systems outside of the commercial art world, that fit around duties of care, domestic responsibilities and financial circumstances.

Blightman’s work has been exhibited in the UK and internationally, including solo and duo exhibitions at the Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne, the Vleeshal Center for Contemporary Art, Middelburg, the Kunsthalle Bern, Bern and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. Performances and video works at Lafayette Anticipations, Paris; Haus am Waldsee, Berlin; Fridericianum, Kassel; South London Gallery, London; Hayward Gallery, London; Kunsthaus Bregenz, Bregenz and the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London.
