Turing-completeness as medium: computers, art and intentionality
Central Saint Martins
This research is a study of computing machines that will extend Alan Turing’s ‘universality’ concept and his formalisation of the algorithm beyond theoretical computer science and into contemporary art practice. It aims to demonstrate a ‘universality of medium’ among art of any sort made on Turing-complete computing machines (i.e. any modern computer) using Turing’s definition of ‘universality’, and develop a framework for a corresponding medium-based critique.
