Digital Pattern Design and Print

College
Chelsea College of Arts
Taught by
Kenny Taylor

Description

Based on Digital Textile Design, this course will encompass all the skills you will need to get you started in digital textile printing. It will focus on the two main print specific Adobe Products; Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. You'll learn how to generate repeat pattern designs – the patterns will then be printed onto a silk bamboo fabric.

You will be introduced to digital printed textile design techniques and will learn the differences between the two main Adobe Image editing packages when creating printed textiles.

It would be an advantage if you could bring along any of your own drawings, or photographic influences to inform your designs.

Topics Covered:

  • Introduction to Adobe Photoshop: Selecting and Layering Tools

  • Preparing an image: scanning and cleaning

  • Creating pattern designs using Adobe Photoshop

  • Creating and editing vector shapes using Adobe Illustrator

  • Polyester sample printing using a heat press

  • Digital fabric printing on bamboo silk

Course Outcomes
You’ll leave the course with the ability to create pattern repeats in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. You will be able to prepare print ready documents and have a greater knowledge of the processes involved with digitally printing your textile designs onto fabric*. You may go on to create your own textile designs or apply for another digital textile printing course.

Who Should Attend
Anyone looking to learn the principles of digital pattern design using Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator, and gain an insight into the digital fabric print process. If you have no previous experience of using Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator, it is recommended that you attend either an evening or Saturday course.

Course Level
Beginner/Intermediate

*N.B. Whilst we endeavour to complete the printing of student fabric samples by the end of the course, this may not always be possible due to time restrictions, particularly with day time classes. In such circumstances we will arrange for your work to be collected or delivered as soon after the course as possible. Final work will be printed onto Silk Bamboo.

Student Reviews

'The most satisfying aspect, is the application of printing your design on silky-smooth lightweight cotton fabric (60gsm), about a metre long, on the final day. And since they are by designed by the sweat and blood of your own industry, they do feel more polished and luxurious than any paid for commercial brand.' - MJKM.

"The course structure was exactly what I was looking for. This was a great way to provide me with new skills within the textile industry. I thought it was excellent, the tutor was very knowledgable and as it was a small class he was able to provide everyone with the attention they required."
