Join Costume and set design for teenagers, aged 16-18 years olds and step behind the scenes as you enter the magical world of film and theatre! We will waste no time in getting you experimenting and exploring with a range of materials and techniques.

Working with an enthusiastic and experienced artist, you will to translate your costume and set ideas into sketches, illustrations and small-scale models as you find out what goes on behind the scenes of theatre and screen, as you bring characters and settings, magically, to life.

  • Project - ‘Doorways’
  • Story-telling
  • Storyboards and mood boards
  • Scale model figures
  • Character development 
  • 3D making /costume designing. 
  • Basic model making 
  • Detailed costume sketches or collages
  • Surface textures for both model making and costume paintings
Course outcomes
You will have created a scale model supported by sketches and illustrations. You'll leave the course with a small body of work including costume and set designs. You will have gained a greater understanding of the steps involved with developing your ideas and bringing characters and their settings to life.

Who should attend
This course is suitable for students aged 16 – 18 years, with an interest in art and design. No prior experience is required. An ideal experience for students with an interest in theatre, film and performance, or for those considering further studies in art and design.


Tutor Description

Jacqueline Gunn is a freelance set and costume designer and artist. She lecturers on higher and further education and MA courses in the UK and Europe. Jacqueline has also had several artist residencies in schools, and works with referral units and special needs groups. Jacqueline has worked as a Designer in mainstream and devised Theatre, Opera, Contemporary Dance and Community projects.


Please bring the following materials with you on the first day:

  • A3 Sketchbook

  • Set of pencils

  • Sharpener

  • Eraser

  • Roll of masking tape

  • Magazines for inspiration (not Fashion magazines please)

  • Fabric samples

There is a canteen onsite, alternatively you may wish to bring a packed lunch with you.

Most materials needed for the short courses are available at the Wimbledon College of Arts' Art Shop. Please contact the Art Shop directly for opening hours and availability.
