Documentary Interview Techniques Short Course

Course description

This course will give you a thorough knowledge of some of the different techniques for interviewing in documentaries. Interviews are often used in documentaries, to allow people, to give their opinion and insight or a sense of realism and credibility.

Through a series of discussions, workshops and practical exercises you will explore different techniques and styles of interviewing. By the end of the course you will have the confidence to interview confidently in a variety of different filming situations.

Course Outcomes
By the end of this course you should be able to:

  • Develop rapport and engage with interviewees
  • Ask questions that produce good answers for the edit
  • Interview confidently in a variety of film situations

Who Should Attend
This course is suitable for you, if you have an interest but no experience in documentary film. You may be an artist, web-designer, media professional or student.

  • As long as you attend a minimum of 80% of your classes, we will provide you with a certificate of attendance. 
  • We always recommend you attend all of the classes so that you get the most out of the experience! 
  • Certificates are great to complement your cv. 

This course is scheduled to run on campus in a face-to-face delivery format. Please note that due to the ongoing pandemic situation this course may be adapted in line with UK government guidance or other operational requirements. This may include changing course location (to another UAL site), cancellation of the course, or moving part or all of the course online. In the event of any changes being required we will inform you as soon as possible and support you in any changes required. Please bear this in mind when making any travel, visa, or accommodation arrangements.

Materials

IMPORTANT - Adobe ID Login for Short Course Students

Students will need to create an account with Adobe (unless you already have one) in order to access the Adobe suite at the college; instructions are included below. You will need to use a personal email address to create this. If you already have an account with Adobe, please make sure you bring your login details with you on the first day of the course.

Please note:

  • Creating an Adobe account is free.
  • The software will only be accessible when logged into a UAL networked computer
  • The same account can be used outside of the University, but software will only be accessible through a personal paid subscription that students will need to set up independently
  • You can still create an account on the day but doing this beforehand will save time and avoid delays to the start of the class.
  • If you already have an Adobe ID/ subscription you can use this on your short course rather than setting up a new account.

To create an account students will need to:
