BA (Hons) Fashion Marketing and Consumer Behaviour provides a broad theoretical and practical base from which to launch your career in the fashion and marketing industries. The curriculum explores the reasons why consumers make purchase decisions and prioritise certain brands over others, and integrates market research techniques to uncover consumer insights. We recently caught up with current student Amy Batten to find out more about her experiences on the course so far.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and why you chose the BA (Hons) Fashion Marketing and Consumer Behaviour course?

Hi, my name is Amy Batten and I studied Psychology, Sociology and Geography for my A-levels so therefore found BA (Hons) Fashion Narketing and Consumer Behaviour a good mix of these subjects whilst having a focus on fashion which has always been a passion and interest of mine.

Can you tell us about a project you have worked or are working on, and what aspects you enjoyed the most?

I am currently working on a sustainability business report within a module called Consumer Behaviour and Market Research which I am basing on the use of authentic fur and leather within the fashion industry. I have always found sustainability issues very contemporary and something that needs attention, especially from the fashion industry holistically as it is an extremely polluting sector, so changes are essential to improve its longevity.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of applying to Fashion Marketing and Consumer Behaviour?

My advice to future students on this course is to find topics, areas and brands within the fashion industry that they are interested in. Then completing their assignments on one of these, as it will make the assignments much more enjoyable and interesting to complete.

I would also suggest attending exhibitions and reading articles, books and newsletters from credible sources such as Business of Fashion (which you can sign up to and receive regular emails). Also listening to podcasts is a good way of staying up to date with the fashion industry as it is extremely fast paced and unpredictable.

What skills have you learned on Fashion Marketing and Consumer Behaviour that you have been able to practice outside of London College of Fashion?

During this course so far, I have learnt how to Harvard reference effectively, how to use Microsoft Excel and how to produce professional presentations and business reports. These are not only beneficial skills for me during this degree but will be going forward in my future jobs and ventures.

Have you had interactions with fashion industry links, if so, how?

So far during my course I was lucky enough to attend Moncler’s ‘The Art of Genius’ project which was a London Fashion Week 2023 exclusive, The Vogue X Snapchat exhibition and ‘The Art of Menswear’ exhibition at the V&A museum which was sponsored by Gucci. All these events were amazing, and I would love to continue to attend events like this in the future.

What inspires you?

My inspiration stems from powerful and influential women in media who are not afraid to make a stand, be themselves, be different, stand out and do good with their platform. These women include Bella Hadid and Blake Lively. These women aren’t afraid to go against the grain. A moment that really stands out to me is Blake Lively’s 2022 Met Gala showstopper dress which was heavily inspired by the statue of liberty’s changing colour over the decades. Adding to this, Blake Lively played Serena Van Der Woodsen in Gossip Girl which is one of my favourite shows when I was younger and still now.

What are your plans for the next few years, and where do you want to see yourself professionally?

My plans for the next few years are to make the most of any industry events and opportunities such as placement years, exhibitions and industry talks as these are fascinating and help to add depth and wider knowledge to my studies.
