Essential coronavirus info Your safety is our first priority.
While experiencing works of art at first hand, the aim is to provide a stimulating and enjoyable introduction to some of the most significant eras in western art from the Renaissance to the late 19th century. The course will take us on a journey through the National Gallery, taking advantage of this extraordinarily rich collection.
With the emphasis on really looking and group discussion, the course is both intended as a foundation for those considering further study in this area as well for those who enjoy art and would simply like to know more. In addition to considering the significance of the themes and aesthetic qualities of the paintings in question, we will discuss changes in artistic practices, shifts in the function of art, and the impact on patronage.
Students will hopefully leave the course with a greater awareness of different art historical approaches to the subject and most importantly an increased pleasure in looking at art.
