Understanding Cultural Appreciation for Designers Online Short Course

Course description

On the Understanding Cultural Appreciation for Designers Online Short Course students learn how cultures can be seen to shape and influence creative practice. Examples from a range of creative industries including fashion, fine art and graphic design will be presented and discussed.

The course covers definitions of cultural appreciation and explores its relevance in contemporary society. Students discuss the benefits of cultural appreciation and consider how to identify it in their own practice.

Through a series of lectures, activities and discussion about cultural appropriation, students will:

  • Explore what it means to be inspired by other people and their ideas
  • Consider how to make meaningful decisions through their creative process
  • Discuss notions of theft, as well as how to credit and respond appropriately to a range of reactions after their work has been shared
  • Learn how to respond appropriately if something goes wrong

This two-hour class is the second in a series of three with a focus on culture in creativity. The culture in creativity series offers participants an insight into how to use inspiration in the creative process while respecting other voices. The first class explores cultural appropriation, while the second class is focused on cultural appreciation and final class addresses the concept of a cancel culture. Each class can be booked separately, though they reference each other.
