Rachel Marsden

Biography

Dr Rachel Marsden (she/her/hers) is Senior Lecturer in Academic Practice, teaching into the PgCert and MA in Academic Practice in Art, Design and Communication, and Research Training Manager for the research network for doctoral students (RNUAL) across all UAL colleges, including PhD supervision.
Research interests comprise practice-based research, inclusive pedagogies and ethics of care. This work is informed by her practice in creative health, social prescribing, trauma-informed practice and disability justice. Rachel is currently an investigator on the international research-driven curatorial project ‘Stomach Ache: Art and the Gastrointestinal System’, a member of UAL’s Health, Arts and Design (HEARD) research hub, and Regional Champion for the Culture, Health and Wellbeing Alliance (CHWA).
In addition, Rachel’s experience as a curator, consultant, educator and arts writer spans across contemporary arts and culture; Higher Education and academia; and voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) sectors, from living and working in the UK, USA, China and Australia.
She has a curatorial practice-led PhD in ‘The Transcultural Curator: Translating Networked Curatorial Practices in the Chinese Context since 1980’ from the Centre for Chinese Visual Arts (CCVA) and continues to research artistic and curatorial practices in China and the Asia-Pacific. She is also a member of the International Association of Arts Critics (AICA).
