Biography

Honorary Doctor

From his earliest days, Hernando Chindoy Chindoy has worked with indigenous and marginalised communities in his native country of Colombia to combat poverty, hunger and inequality, through the use of traditional and ancestral knowledge, nature and community-based solutions.

His fight for nature and protecting the human rights of indigenous people dates back to 1994 when the people from his native indigenous community in Aponte-El Tablón de Gómez-Nariño appointed him to be their representative before their governing bodies.

Over the years, he has helped his community to break free from the clutches of illegal drug trafficking, guerrillas and the paramilitary and his message of Biocultural Peace has impacted an indeterminate number of people all around the world.

His determination to help stop the destruction of biodiversity and to encourage dialogues between traditional knowledge and the sciences has awarded him with scholarships from various institutes, including, La Fundación Internacional de Apoyo al Desarrollo Local y Social; the International Foundation for the Support of Local and Social Development (FIADELSO), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), CBD, Instituto Interamericano de Derechos Humanos; Interamerican Institute for Human Rights (IIDH) and the United Nations Development Programme (PNUD) amongst others.

From 2017 to 2022, Hernando spearheaded the creation of the National Organization AWAI of the Inga Indigenous people in Colombia, during which time he also contributed to the creation of the Inga Panamazonic Biocultural Pluriversity AWAI.
