Photographer Luisa Whitton’s powerful and thought provoking images of the Japanese robotics industry have been fascinating audiences throughout 2013.
The London College of Communication, BA (Hons) Photography graduate has picked up a number of accolades including the Hotshoe graduate portfolio award, a place among It’s Nice That’s list of top Graduates 2013 and last week the graduate prize at Millennium Pictures, Peaches & Cream 2013 exhibition – where you can see her work until 17 October.
In her project What About the Heart, Luisa travelled to Japan gaining access to robotics facilities, photographing Japanese humanoids and interviewing scientists to gain an understanding of their philosophies and intentions for these hyper-realistic robots.
The series, which was showcased at LCC’s Summer Shows 2013, has already been published in The British Journal of Photography, Hotshoe and most recently The Telegraph magazine, but Luisa feels that like the human robotics industry, her photography is still a work in progress.
“I don’t think I have fully figured out what my practice as a photographer is about yet, but at the moment I am just interested in making thought provoking and powerful images that speak about technology today.”
