Paige Cartledge, one of this year’s BA (Hons) Surface Design graduating students, has just won the New Designers Tiger Print award. Her beautiful collection of wallpapers and stationary entitled ‘Cabinets of Curiosities’ has earned her a £500 cash prize and a six month paid placement across Tiger Print’s two studios.

We caught up with Paige to find out a little more.

Tell us a bit about your collection?

My collection was inspired by the early 16th Century ‘Cabinets of Curiosities’ and my fascination with natural history, taxidermy and the curation of museum displays. I began by visiting as many natural history museums around the UK as I could get to, and started to illustrate the specimens from the Ornithology collections that I found most interesting. Combining my love for drawing, natural history and screen printing, I created a collection of hand printed wallpapers and stationary aimed at celebrating the wonder and beauty within our natural world, and hopefully re-capture our inner curiosity.

How did you feel when you found out that you had won the Tiger Print award?

I was very overwhelmed when I found out I had won the Tiger Print award. I have only discovered my style of working just over a year ago so it was amazing to receive such great feedback and interest. Tiger Print have been a great inspiration throughout my creative practice so I can’t wait to be a part of their team.

What does the future hold for you?

I start my paid 6 months placement with Tiger Print in August but before then I have a bit of freelance work lined up. In the future I hope to continue to sell my work and set up my own business, selling my work online and through various stockists.
