EcoCentrix: Indigenous Arts, Sustainable Acts
Pathway Leader BA Theatre Design Lucy Algar has designed EcoCentrix an interactive exhibition. Uniquely comprised of both live performance and the traces it leaves behind in images, digital media, sounds, texts and crafted objects. EcoCentrix offers fresh ways of grasping what sustainable can mean.
The exhibition brings to London the work of more than 40 contemporary indigenous artists from the Americas, Australia, the Pacific and South Africa. The artists merge the familiar with the unexpected, the traditional with the experimental. They provoke dialogues about resources, social justice and stereotypes, and show the triumphs and failures of our times.
The design of the exhibiton allows visitors to see, touch and hear unique installations and performances offering an opportunity to participate in a new conversation on indigenous cultures. The exhibition also features a host of talks and workshops by indigenous performance makers, encouraging participants to think about sustainability as a way of making art.
This innovative approach to engaging visitors with the subject of sustainability through interaction and active participation represents the changing culture of theatre and visual arts. This ever evolving culture is the critical and contextual underpinning of the BA Theatre Design Pathway. Lucy’s professional practice and experience as an exhibition designer is integral to her teaching. Her work on the EcoCentrix exhibition highlights the increasingly interdisciplinary and intercultural world that our BA Theatre Design students engage and work within.
