Sahra Mosawi at the Film Middle East Now Festival
London College of Communication (LCC) graduate and documentary filmmaker Sahra Mosawi is playing a leading role in organising the Afghanistan Human Rights Film Festival, taking place this October in Kabul.
Afghan-born Mosawi studied MA Documentary Film at LCC. Her work focuses largely on the issues of women’s empowerment in Islam, education (and its links to poverty) in Afghanistan. Her documentary ‘Kaloo School,’ examines the extraordinary lengths children go to for education in rural Afghanistan. And in ‘Beyond the Burkha’ she tells the story of a group of Afghan women trying to build a different future for themselves despite the constraints of their society.
Other works such as ‘A Day of My Life’ and ‘Another Sky’ explore refugee life for Afghan women in the UK and Iran. Last year, her documentaries were screened at prestigious film festivals around the world such as IDFA 2012 (International Film Festival Amsterdam) and the WMM film festival in Boston.
Mosawi is the Development Manager for the Afghanistan Human Rights Film Festival, a job which involves collaborating with the University of the Arts in Kabul to run workshops and liasing with directors. Screenings will take place across Kabul with 50 films being shown in total, chosen from a total of 350 entries comprising both international and Afghan work.
