University of the Arts London’s (UAL) research vision is to “ask original questions and arrive at new insights”, highlighting the importance of art and design in society. This vision will come to life with an inspiring exploration of a range of arts’ disciplines in Research Fortnight, March 5 to 16.

Research Fortnight is a two-week programme of over 75 events, artist talks, screenings, symposiums, workshops and more, in and around UAL’s six colleges. Many of these events are open to the public – follow the links to book.

Our research is focused on contributing to four major global challenges for our times:

  • Living with Environmental Change
  • Lifelong Health and Wellbeing
  • Digital Futures
  • Community Resilience

Public events

  • Research Fortnight launch event – we welcome Professor Mugendi K M’Rithaa, designer, educator and researcher at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, and a curator for Design Indaba Expo
  • Punk Pedagogies in Practice symposium: explore the relationship between punk scholarship and a range of teaching practices – from graphic design to visual communication, music, politics and cultural theory
  • As photography predominantly becomes a medium of digits and bytes, join us for the The Algorithmic image, a series of short talks asking what it means to live in a world where the majority of photographs are now made by machines, for other machines
  • Learn about the role clothes might play within future cityscapes at wearable resistance and hear about the world’s shifting fashion borders, with designers from the New East becoming some of the hottest names in the global fashion world.
  • Screenings include Mansfield 66/67 a documentary about 1950s screen icon Jayne Mansfield and the rumours that surround her untimely death; and Erase and Forget, a major new investigative documentary for our times.

Every year Research Fortnight at UAL brings to public attention the extraordinary range of research being undertaken across the university. It throws a spotlight on how UAL is leading the way internationally in the area of practice-based and practice-led research, and the way that research might inform creative teaching. This year’s research fortnight also shows how our researchers are increasingly interacting with other disciplines and partners, indicating the wider relevance, agency and impact of art and design research. At UAL, we do not see our research as an internalised process, but want to situate our research in relation to people’s lives and society’s cultures; Research Fortnight provides many examples of this external impact in action.” –  Professor Jeremy Till, Pro Vice-Chancellor Research, University of the Arts London.
