UAL aims to be the best in the world in teaching, research and knowledge exchange, but we cannot do everything for ourselves. Working with external specialist partners is often the most effective way to provide the highest quality services for our staff and students – often better than we could achieve in-house. We have, and continue to be, open to maintaining a dialogue with the trade unions on this important matter.

Following a rigorous 18-month procurement process, during which we consulted with more than 100 stakeholders, UAL selected our current supplier as our cleaning and securities management partner. We take steps to ensure working conditions for contract staff are kept under careful review and are in line with good practice. We work closely with suppliers so they can quickly address any concerns raised.

On retendering, UAL insured the contracts included a number of provisions on enhanced pay and leave. UAL has paid the London Living Wage (LLW) since 2014 and ensure predictable hours for our cleaners and facilities staff through the Living Hours standard. This guarantees the right to a minimum number of hours to outsourced staff, as well as four weeks’ notice before changes to their rota. The contract also incorporates a minimum of 31 days holiday (plus Bank Holidays). In 2022, to support staff during the cost-of-living crisis, UAL provided a one-off payment of up to £800 to all eligible staff, including contract staff, on a pro-rata basis.
