European Research Council opportunities at UAL

UAL welcomes outstanding researchers funded by the European Research Council (ERC) who wish to pursue creativity-driven research.

ERC grants support individual researchers of any nationality who wish to pursue curiosity-driven research in any of the 28 EU Member States or Associated Countries. In particular, ERC encourages proposals that cross disciplinary boundaries, pioneer ideas that address new and emerging fields, and introduce unconventional and innovative approaches.

ERC-funded research at UAL

UAL is an active participant in Horizon 2020 and it is open to consider expressions of interest from excellent researchers in the fields or arts, design, fashion and humanities. We can support ERC applicants in screening and reviewing their proposal to ensure that it meets ERC criteria and takes advantage of the expertise and resources at UAL. We provide an excellent research environment for carrying-out ground-breaking, creativity-driven research. We also offer a full project management service to see a grant through from initiation to conclusion. There are 3 ERC schemes to consider:

ERC Starting Grants (StG)

ERC StG encourage early career researchers who have the potential to become independent research leaders. Funding is up to € 1.5 million (in some circumstances up to € 2 million) for 5 years. Applicants can be of any nationality and with 2 to 7 years of experience since the completion of their PhD (or equivalent degree). They must demonstrate their potential for research independence (e.g., produced at least one important publication without the participation of their PhD supervisor) and a track-record of early achievements appropriate to their research field and career stage (e.g., significant publications as the main author). They should also demonstrate evidence of peer esteem, as such invited presentations to well-established international conferences, granted patents, awards, and prizes. Full descriptions on the annual call for proposals are on the ERC website and on the Participant Portal.

ERC Consolidator Grants (CoG)

ERC CoG support researchers at the stage in their careers when they are consolidating their own independent research team or programme. Funding is up to € 2 million (in some circumstances up to € 2.75 million) for up to 5 years.Applicants can be of any nationality and with 7 to 12 years of experience since the completion of their PhD (or equivalent degree). They must demonstrate research independence and evidence of scientific maturity (e.g., produced independently several important publications without the participation of their PhD supervisor) and a track-record of early achievements appropriate to their research field and career stage (e.g., significant publications as the main author). They should also demonstrate evidence of peer esteem, as such invited presentations to well-established international conferences, granted patents, awards, and prizes. Full descriptions on the annual call for proposals are on the ERC website and on the Participant Portal.

ERC Advanced Grants (AdG)

ERC AdG support exceptional established research leaders of any nationality and any age to pursue ground-breaking, high-risk projects that open new directions in their respective research fields or other domains. Funding is up to € 2.5 million per grant (in some circumstances up to € 3.5 million per grant) for up to 5 years. Applicants can be of any nationality and are expected to be active researchers who have a track-record of significant research achievements in the last 10 years. They should be exceptional leaders in terms of originality and significance of their research contributions.
