Description

Successful films are based on scripts that are unified to a central theme. Knowing and understanding the theme is crucial for productive scriptwriting. This awareness also adds to a more enjoyable and rewarding writing experience.

On this course we will provide clear and practical strategies, including critical analysis of films and devising creative writing templates that ensure ideas are developed to their full potential.

Before embarking on the challenging process of scriptwriting, it is important to be aware of where your ideas come from and where they are going. Gaining a secure and confident understanding of character and story enables a solid template from which to write and structure a script.

Topics covered

  • Rather than starting with a blank page, we begin by analyzing a selection of short films and ask why and how they engage us.
  • Key elements are identified such as archetypes, structure and context.
  • Via both individual and shared authorship, we will write our own stories using the short film analyses as working templates.
  • Your own stories will thus immediately become part of the greater canon of stories used for film making.
  • Participants will have opportunity to pitch their story ideas and complete a treatment for a film by the end of the course.
  • You will be able to suggest short films of your choice for use on the course.
  • You will also glean many tips and tools for progressing and experimenting with ideas in a supportive and constructive environment.

Students should leave this course with at least one well developed story ready to be produced into a script.

Who should take this course?

Beginners and experienced students interested in scriptwriting and/or the process of ideas development for film making.
