Each year, Arts SU hosts by-elections giving students the opportunity to nominate school representatives. In this role, reps listen, collate and communicate the views of all students, taking these views to meetings and to staff to bring about positive changes for their peers. This includes attending Boards of Study meetings, Student and Dean Forums and other University meetings to support the feedback loop. We caught up with this year's elected reps Elle Robertson, Siyuan Liang and Juhye Moon to find out who they are, what interested them about this role, and what their plans and priorities are for this academic year.

Meet Elle Robertson

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I'm Elle, a 3rd year MSc Strategic Fashion Management student. I moved here from a farm in Australia in 2019 and in my spare time I volunteer with a wildlife rescue, sew and explore London. I'm also currently in the process of walking around London, which is about 150 miles over 24 stages!

What made you apply for the role as school rep?

I've been course rep for three years and have really enjoyed helping improve the student experience - and this seemed like the next step! I really want to work on solving school-wide issues experienced by students, as well as build a cross-course community!

Tell us your plan, what are some of the key goals you want to achieve in this role?

One of my short-term goals is getting more in-person industry events for the Fashion Business School (FBS) community, specifically those from the 'back end’ of companies that we often don't hear from. In terms of longer projects, I hope to support the FBS social committee and work on a universal Moodle template for FBS courses.

Meet Siyuan Liang

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Siyuan Liang a first-year student on BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear. I applied for the school rep role mainly because of my experience as a course rep on International Preparation for Fashion. When I first came to London, I felt quite nervous and excited to face a new city, the culture and learn a second language. The good thing is I met so many new friends, and my tutor was so nice to me. They are always there when we need them, even for small things like going to the hospital, which is deeply warming and has made me more comfortable with life in London.

What made you apply for the role as school rep?

When I heard the school rep role would be representing LCF I was very excited to participate in the elections as I knew students from different courses and feel a sense of satisfaction and achievement when helping others.

Tell us your plan, what are some of the key goals you want to achieve in this role?

In this role, I want to help more international students better integrate into study and life in London, because I know that people with different educational backgrounds have different experiences. For example, in my hometown, students are not familiar with casual chat in class, are shy to express their ideas, and afraid to speak in public or during group work but these skills can be very helpful to designers.

What interests me most about this role is collecting feedback and reporting it to the school, to help build a better study environment together. I want to see UAL get better and help teachers do their job more efficiently.

Meet Juhye Moon

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Juhye Moon, and I am currently in my third year on BA (Hons) Cordwainers Footwear course at LCF, and I am extremely delighted to join LCF community as a school rep.

What made you apply for the role as school rep?

One of the big factors that attracted me to this role is to bring effective change within teams and suggest innovative ideas to help improve education for fashion students.

Tell us your plan, what are some of the key goals you want to achieve in this role?

My priorities are;

  1. Improving the quality of LCF graduate showcases - I intend to advocate for the development and management of interactive graduates shows, by inviting fashion brands to UAL showcases.
  2. Increasing social integration (cross-course learning) - I aim to magnify the new social integration with other courses to exchange technical skills. This will assist students to boost academic achievement with diverse experiences and with a variety of techniques. Moreover, it provides more accessibility to other courses and resources.
  3. Ensuring accessibility of college facilities, workshops and clubs for study and research after graduation.
