One of the most important events of the capital’s fashion calendar – London Fashion Week – took place between 17 – 21 February, in a new home at 180 The Strand. Designers and fashion houses showcase collections to an audience with a global reach, each season adds an estimated £269 million a year to the British economy. We look at the LCF Alumni presence this season.

J.W.Anderson (BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology Menswear alumnus) has become (rightly so) one of the most anticipated shows at London Fashion Week. His work is constantly evolving and looks far and wide for inspiration, this year’s collection took references from Tudor history. The ‘style odyssey’ collection featured quilted leather and puff sleeves as it followed the story of a woman sent on a journey.

Womenswear alumnus Ryan Lo referenced recently-defunct Japanese style magazine Fruits for his AW17 collection. The publication built a reputation on championing the countries Harajuku girls – this was the starting point for his collection. The collection featured star-spattered camouflage silk, rose-embellished dresses and plenty of love hearts, something Lo is increasingly becoming known for.

Rising footwear star Camilla Elphick launched her AW17 collection with a party at L’Escargot, which was coined Surreal Shoe Soiree. She called this the collection of surrealist and epicurean details, including feline prints and swimming fish against rich velvet. Her famous PEZ heels were also updated with a crystal-eyed lobster embellish. The shoes were laid out on a table amongst cakes and champagne.

Charlotte Olympia launched her AW17 collection with a film noir premiere at the Curzon in Mayfair over London Fashion Week. ‘An Accessory To Murder’ was the name of the Cordwainers’ production – invites were made to look like vintage tokens and the venue featured “web of high heels, leopard print, and murder”. The new collection was inspired by Lauren Bacall, Rita Hayworth, and Barbara Stanwyck, and features retro-inspired monochromatic styles as a modern interpretation of 1940s silhouettes. Camilla was selected for Walpole’s Brands of Tomorrow earlier this year.

BA (Hons) Fashion Textiles alumna Hannah Weiland’s Shrimps referenced Louise Bourgeois, Scotland and the Royal Portraits of Robert Peake and Rachael Ruysch for her AW17 collection. Hannah looked to oversized silhouettes and ladylike finishes for her collection with plenty of colours and textures that speak volume.

Cordwainers Dora Teymur, the driving force behind DORATEYMUR, has been one of the highlights of the past year. After being shortlisted for the Boden 2017 Future British Designers by British Fashion Council and Vogue earlier this year, Dora presented his AW17 collection at the Old Truman Brewery. A living room was created for the models to showcase the collection while seated. His collection was exotic and included new colours to his palette like pistachio and pistachio.

Xiao Li, BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology Womenswear alumna, presented her collection in a pitch-black room where her garments were the only visible things. Her AW17 collection was a modern conservative style with current layers and cutting techniques. She presented a very feminine collection for a cosmopolitian consumer.

Sophia Webster created a Winter Wonderland for her AW17 collection, where the Cordwainers alumna transferred the basement of Soho electronic music store Phonica into arctic escape with makeshift white snow. Her collection, I Scream for Ice Queens, was a playful and fun showcase of colour and neon lights.
