"When I came across this course I was intrigued by the emphasis on sustainability in fashion and I saw it as an excellent gateway to allow me to work in the industry but still have a positive impact."

— Evie Scardthomas
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and why you chose the BSc (Hons) Psychology of Fashion?

I chose to study this BSc (Hons) Psychology of Fashion due to my interest in psychology which began in my psychology A-level and my creative love for fashion. I have always wanted to work in the fashion industry but due to the fashion industry being one of the biggest polluters I was put off as it didn’t align with my values. When I came across this course I was intrigued by the emphasis on sustainability in fashion and I saw it as an excellent gateway to allow me to work in the industry but still have a positive impact.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and why you chose the BSc (Hons) Psychology of Fashion?

I am currently working on my dissertation which is focused on trend forecasting and the role fast fashion plays. I am looking forward to interviewing professionals in the industry as I think they will provide insightful information into the industry and allow me to make valuable contacts.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of applying to this course?

Gain as much experience in the industry as you can. This is because it will give you more knowledge on the topics you will be learning about and allow you to apply your experience to your research. Networking is also a useful tool for getting into the industry so I would so I would suggest attending as many events as you can!

In this course you can hear about experiences in the industry as we have a lot of guest lectures. These are always insightful. One that stood out to me was a talk from a strategic analyst and marketer at People Tree because they spoke about how the most sustainable future for the brand would be for them to discontinue. I found this interesting as no consumer-able product can be fully sustainable and so this desire shows sustainability really is a core value for them and the company.

What skills have you learned on the course that you have been able to practice outside of London College of Fashion?

Through learning about the ethics in the process behind making garments and different marketing techniques used in the fashion industry I have been able to analyse my own consumption habits. With this information I have tried to make more sustainable purchases and make sure I’m not over consuming. For example, I really think about the wear I will get out of an item before I buy it and I think about the brand I am buying from and whether my values align with them.

What inspires you?

Having a positive and ethical impact in the fashion industry is what inspires me. I believe this course has given me the groundwork to apply my knowledge to make fashion brands more ethical.

What are your plans for the next few years, and where do you want to see yourself professionally?

In the next few years, I plan to continue setting up my own ethical fashion brand with three other students at UAL. In addition, I hope to gain experience in the industry and learn more about how it can be improved for the better whilst being able to contribute the knowledge I have gained from my degree.
