In the lead up to this year’s MA Fashion Design Technology Menswear show, we’ve been chatting with the students to hear all about their final projects, and to find out more about their inspirations and motivations behind the collections that they will be presenting on Monday 7 January. My project initially developed from the concept of “psychological distance” as expressed by Edward Bullough (1912). I tried to add my personal emotions to the garments, and to explore the psychological distance between the wearer and the garments. My collection Always the years between us demonstrates how personal emotional experiences are linked through fashion design and emotions. This MA helped me to define myself and to build up my personal design methodology. It was a good chance to cooperate with people in different areas, and taught me not to be afraid of exploring more possibilities as a designer. – Jialin Chen (Photography: Anyi Ren)

In a world where nothing is constant, growth became my fascination, a territory to conquer and master; this collection embodies the first explorations focused on the mind and the multiple bodies we possess. The course has been an intense and challenging experience, a platform to build my career. I had the chance to collaborate with other students to enhance my collection, and the great support of Darren Cabon pushed me to define and develop myself as a designer. – Steven Passaro (Photography: James O’Doherty)
My inspiration for this collection comes from Egyptian kitsch aesthetics and trash couture inspired by male belly dancers. Taking this course at LCF was super helpful and productive, such a good experience. My collection, titled Migratory Vagueness, expresses the vagueness of the objects and human identities. It tells the story that there is nothing really defined, represented by The Uncanny, in which the familiar is unfamiliar. My time at LCF was all about breaking my limitations and building up my systems. The collection YOU started with remembering and forgetting that we combine memories, life and identity. The sexually aggressive elements combined with humour through colour and patent leather is showing the self-control and individual liberalism by ‘binding’ and ‘releasing’ elements. I had a really nice and unforgettable experience on the MA course. I’ve learnt a lot from the tutors, classmates and the industry. The NoMics collection is a poetic reflection of ergonomics, portraying utility versus body. This collection has undergone the study of the millennial lifestyle to allow more ease in movement whilst embracing minimalism. The course has taught me to translate my creative vision into my collection. It’s been a real eye opening experience. – Suhyoung Choi
My collection is inspired by my grandparents’ youthful memories, embodied within a pearl necklace they have handed over to me as their keepsake. This course allowed me to give myself a chance to develop as a designer as well as an individual, and to realise what is it to be an actual designer as a team member of the fashion industry. Personally, I thought that the course was going to conclude my design style, however, it is actually the beginning of my career as a designer. – Natalie Ruston
My project originally comes from passengers on London Underground, standing closely without any personal space. Proxemics is a main clue for the collection, which helped me to developing my own design methodology: folding and overlapping. – Zhuti Pan (Photography: Annie Lai)
In the search for simple and minimally unwavering silhouettes, I have tried to create an experience by focussing on applying minimalism to my design process, reducing the garment to as fundamental a state as possible. My time on the course has been incredibly demanding but as a result has helped me progress as an academic and a designer, both of which wouldn’t have been possible without the staff on the Menswear course; I am grateful to them for their creativity, commitment and support. – Rachel Brown (Photography: Paul Astley)
Inspired by the movie Mr. Mom, which tells the story of a businessman becoming a stay-at-home dad, my collection is dedicated to create innovative, functional clothing for fathers to have better lives with their children and be more confident to attend any occasion. Doing this MA has been really important for me, and it has taught me to never limit my design ideas. For me, this course represents the start of my career as a menswear designer. – Siyi Long (Photography: Ray Chung)
This project emerged from the struggles to find out who I am, as an expression of myself in the quest to find the meaning of life. My time at LCF has not only been helpful for my future professional live, but it has also given me the opportunity to get to know myself more deeply. – Bongseok Gwon
