Why did you apply for BSc (Hons) Buying and Merchandising at London College of Fashion?

I originally applied to study BSc (Hons) Fashion Management at London College of Fashion because I knew I wanted to work on the business side of fashion. I’ve always been interested in how brands grow and how trends translate into commercial success. However, when I received my offer, it was actually for BA (Hons) Fashion Buying and Merchandising, a course I had never even heard of at the time and had no idea what it involved.

After doing my research and looking deeper into the course structure, I realised it was exactly what I wanted, where creativity meets data and trend awareness meets commercial decision-making. It turned out to be an amazing course, and I have really enjoyed all the projects I have worked on.

As part of your course, you studied at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia — can you tell us a bit about that experience?

This was definitely the highlight of my degree! I wanted to push myself outside of my comfort zone and gain a more global perspective on the fashion industry. I felt that experiencing a different market firsthand would broaden my understanding of retail strategy and consumer behaviour internationally, and it absolutely did!

The best part of the experience was the independence and confidence I gained. Being in a completely new environment challenged me to adapt quickly and become more self-reliant, both academically and personally. It forced me to grow in ways I hadn’t expected.

Melbourne’s street style and retail landscape were also incredibly inspiring. Outside of university, I had so much fun exploring the city, discovering new neighbourhoods, and meeting people from all over the world.

What skills or knowledge did you gain from this experience?

Academically, the buying and merchandising units were very valuable. They were practical and industry-focused, and gave me hands-on experience with strategies that are directly relevant to the fashion industry. The merchandising unit was Excel- and formula-heavy, so I developed my Excel skills significantly and learned more about buying strategies, negotiation techniques, stock planning, and commercial decision-making. The units felt real and applicable, and I had the opportunity to work in teams with other students.

Overall, I would say the experience made me feel much more confident, especially when applying for jobs, because I felt I had gained both practical industry knowledge and personal resilience.

How has this experience expanded your understanding of the fashion industry and influenced your future career plans?

This experience has significantly influenced my future career plans. Studying in Melbourne exposed me to a different retail environment and consumer mindset, which made me realise how important it is to understand fashion from a global perspective. It reinforced my interest in working within an international fashion brand, particularly in roles that combine buying strategy with global market awareness.

Why would you recommend this experience, and what advice would you give to new students thinking about taking part in similar opportunities?

I would absolutely recommend doing the study exchange programme that LCF offers. It might seem overwhelming at first, but it is worth the effort and is a super rewarding and memorable experience. If you receive an offer for something you are unfamiliar with, research it. You might discover a path that suits you even better.

If you are considering studying abroad, I would encourage you to take the leap. It may feel daunting at first, but LCF exchange officers provide a lot of support. It will push you to grow in ways that will benefit both your career and your personal development long after the experience ends.
