The fashion industry is more than just talented designers and makers and for businesses to be successful, brands rely on those who are analytical-minded and have a flair for numbers.

On BA (Hons) Fashion Buying and Merchandising, students study content which is analytical and numerical, whilst being creative and business-focused. This means students graduate from LCF with a versatile skill set, opening up job opportunities across various sectors.

We caught up with current student Eloise Bell, to learn more about her reasons for choosing the course, her favourite project so far, and all about her experience of studying in LA as part of LCF's exchange programme.

Hi Eloise! What attracted you to studying BA (Hons) Fashion Buying and Merchandising at LCF?

I really enjoy working with fashion and trends, but I've never been passionate about design or creation. When I discovered that LCF offers a course that blends business acumen and fashion studies, I was over the moon!

The reputation and employability opportunities offered to me by LCF were second to none, and the option to spend a year in industry or abroad was an excellent addition too.

Can you tell us about a project you have really enjoyed working on?

In Year 2, we were assigned a task to work alongside a retailer and offer a new range that targeted a new customer or offered a new USP, whilst underpinning the characteristics of that brand.

My team and I chose Flying Tiger Copenhagen, and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of proposing a childrenswear range, with food and fruits as a key theme.

This was so different from any other project we had worked on, and whilst we were out of our comfort zones, we all agreed we would choose to do it again!

What advice would you give to someone thinking of applying to BA (Hons) Fashion Buying and Merchandising?

I would definitely suggest starting a blog or online account dedicated to your fashion work or interests – even if it's just commenting on news, new releases, or current affairs. This is a great way to showcase your skills and a good place to start building a network.

What skills have you learned on BA (Hons) Fashion Buying and Merchandising that you have been able to practice outside of London College of Fashion?

The focus on employability has been remarkable – the assistance in crafting concise, professional, and job-specific portfolios has proven highly beneficial. I've also been able to support my friends and colleagues using these acquired skills.

Additionally, I have found the UAL jobs page to be really helpful in acquiring part time and long-term work that suits my degree and CV.

What was the highlight of your first year at LCF?

Meeting a group of like-minded individuals who were also living away from home for the first time was so valuable. I remember how exciting it was to go to our first lectures together and then explore London afterwards!

Can you tell us a little bit about your study abroad experience?

During my third year, I studied at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, USA and this was the most incredible experience!!

Being able to make friends overseas, travel across California, and study at another institution was so insightful. I learned key differences between European and American Fashion systems, and made life-long memories which I think about every day!

What do you most enjoy about studying in London, and how does being in the fashion capital enhance your learning experience?

The ability to visit museums and libraries, access key locations such as Berwick and Regent Street and study alongside like-minded individuals is one of the most exciting factors of studying in London as the fashion environment is really second to none.

What do you enjoy most about studying in the new building?

The location has incredible views, is accessible from so many lines, and the skyline is definitely the standout – especially facing west for the sunset!
