Artists from MA Art and Science share their contemporary interdisciplinary practice through presentations, discussions and demonstrations.

What better time to hold a symposium about art and science than during a technological revolution that is disrupting the very notion of human creativity? As artists respond to the impacts of artificial intelligence, they are also fighting on a second front of planetary catastrophe. In our rapidly changing and complex world, the MA Art and Science course at Central Saint Martins has never been more relevant.

Artists from the course have created this Symposium to complement and contextualize their final Graduation Show and, more widely, to reflect on the intersection of the two cultures. Some students started from a background in science, some from art, but all have spent two years exploring interdisciplinary practice - making work inspired by both realms of human enquiry. The programme will span many scientific disciplines and artistic practices, from painting to spoken word, from installation to performance.

Part 1: 2.00-3.30pm Through discussions, demonstrations and participatory events, speakers will share their processes and the ways in which their art emerges from scientific themes, whether physical, chemical or biomedical.

Part 2: 4.00-5.30pm Speakers will discuss their practice addressing issues of ecology, landscape and climate, alongside broader sociocultural issues. Exploring philosophical and speculative thinking, the session will navigate through narratives, imagination and alternative futures.
