Summer Schools Opportunities in Europe

As part of the Shared Campus initiative, students have an exciting opportunity to take part in 2 funded summer schools in Athens and Berlin this year.

Summer schools

Athens: Critical Ecologies - Extractive Realities and Ecological Resonances

7 - 18 July 2025

This summer school will explore industrial ecologies, extractivist economies, and environmental impacts through creative and research-led practice. Participants will work on-site in Athens and its surroundings, investigating ecological crises through artistic and activist responses.

Berlin: Cultural Histories and Futures - The Afterlife of Art in the Age of International Art Biennales

6 - 20 August 2025

Taking place in Berlin, a global hub of contemporary art, this summer school will explore the long-term impact of international art biennales on culture, politics, and the global art economy. Students will engage in field visits to museums, research projects, and workshops with artists and curators to examine how biennale artworks shape and challenge cultural narratives over time.​

Eligibility

This opportunity is open those in the 2nd year of their undergraduate course, including those on DPS year and postgraduates (including PhD candidates) who will continue their studies in the immediate autumn term.

UAL is committed to increasing access and participation among underrepresented groups, therefore priority will be given to students who meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Students whose household income is below £50,000 per year.
  • Students in receipt of universal credit or income benefits.
  • Students who receive the UAL bursary.
  • Students who are care leavers/ care givers.
  • Students who have taken part in the UAL insights programme.

Funding

Students selected for either programme will receive up to £1,000 to support their participation in the 2-week engagement.

Applications

Applications will open from Friday 7 March 2025.

The deadline to apply is Friday 4 April and applicants will be notified of the outcome by Friday 11 April.
