Collecting and recollecting: artists archivists in the Brazilian context
Camberwell College of Arts
This history and theory-based study investigates the appropriation of archive-specific documental methodologies by contemporary art practices based in Brazil. Dealing with the foundation from which history is written (the archive, as Foucault understands it), such practices re-inscribe the very memories and identities that they refer to. As such they both become incorporated within the globalised field of art where memory is fragmentary and history unstable while, in their geo-cultural specificity, they reflect the country struggle to articulate a broken identity and history.
