Kate Fletcher of the Centre for Sustainable Fashion speaks at the World of Women festival
Last week, Kate Fletcher, of the Centre for Sustainable Fashion, spoke about her ongoing project, Local Wisdom, at the Women of the World Festival. Talking to fashion editor Melanie Rickey, Kate explained how the Local Wisdom project engaged with the issues that surround sustainable and ethical fashion.
Kate stressed the need for a change in thinking when it comes to fashion and consumption if we are to address the problems of climate change, the exploitation of workers and the overwhelming pressure to endlessly shop for fashion and clothing.
Talking about Local Wisdom, Kate explained that the project explores the political stories of people’s personal wardrobes, looking at fashion and clothing in new ways beyond the idea of consumption. Exploring how clothes are used, shared, mended, inherited and treasured, stories from the project have revealed a more complex vision of fashion, including our creative approach to what we wear.
These stories have come together as ‘Craft of Use’, narratives which will be explored on March 26th at LCF’s John Princes Street with leading artists, academics and fashion creatives.
