MA Fashion Photography graduate Ramandeep Shergill takes centre stage as part of our LCFMA18 graduate spotlight series, and ahead of February’s MA18 exhibition at The Bargehouse, South Bank. Ram has already been a popular photographer in the industry since graduating from Wolverhampton, working on projects with milliner Philip Treacy and being loved by many in the fashion world, including the late Alexander McQueen. His work has also been exhibited at the Whitechapel Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum, as well as Sotheby’s London and Galerie Du Passage in Paris, and he’s taken the portrait of actors like Cillian Murphy. We discuss his ‘Peacock Effect’ project, inspirations and the music that helped craft his work.
Tell us about your final project…
My final project explores the ‘Peacock Effect.’ The Peacock Effect is signified by an individual morphing from a placid state of appearance into a full state of exoticised self, displaying a metaphoric ‘fan-like crest of feathers’ – feathers that are a form of adornment and can become a protective and attractive exo-skeleton to our body. Through the conscious and unconscious appropriation of animal characteristics, humankind evolves into a new form: the ‘Humanimal.’
What would be your top tips for new students…
My top tips would be, go to all your lectures and use this as an opportunity to find out new experiences and knowledge that could possibly inspire your practice. I would suggest going to as many talks and seminars that are on offer at LCF to fulfill your learning experience.
What made you chose LCF and London…
I really liked the structure of the course as it allowed time to research and develop.
What were the highlights and biggest challenges of your course…
The highlights for me were the actual assignments that we were given as they have room to develop and critically evaluate my practice, and also going to the social theory lectures. Another highlight was the range of staff that was available on hand for advice and guidance, this made for a very unique and gratifying learning experience.
What song or album are you currently listening to?
Paloma Faith – The Architect
Read Ram in Leica Camera Magazine
My biggest inspirations and muses are…
Isabella Blow and Alexander McQueen.
What are your plans for life after your MA…
I have an exhibition of work in Los Angeles in February 2018. Then I will apply for a PhD starting in September 2018.
LCF is moving east. What do you think about the move…
I think the move seems promising if there are better facilities available to everyone. For example if there are more bookable spaces for the students to work in, to create and develop ideas. However, the fact that LCF is presently in a very central location is a strong unique selling point as it is easily accessible by all.
