Moscow-native Nunu Gabuniya has touched on how social media and the digital sphere has changed the attitude of fashion media and made a digital presence as important as a physical existence. The MA Fashion Media Production graduate talks to us about her work, feeling inspired by Depeche Mode and the challenges of her course ahead of our LCFMA18 exhibition next month at The Bargehouse, South Bank.
Tell us about your final project…
The project challenges traditional perceptions of fashion media. It features three interactive fashion experiences which the audience will be able to control. It explores self-representation of individuals in the digital sphere, how identity construction has shifted from physical to the recorded medium. It also explores how individuals, especially the ones who consider themselves as media-makers, the way their present themselves and their work over social media, using Instagram as an example. It argues that our digital representation has become equally important as our perception in the material world.
What would be your top tips for new students…
Take as many opportunities as you can.
Experiment and collaborate.
What made you chose LCF and London…
I am in love with London. The diversity of this city, people who live or to come to live here, their stories, traditions, attitude, all of it makes it a unique experience, inspires and creates a desire to be a part of creative industries.
What were the highlights and biggest challenges of your course…
I think the biggest challenge of my course was to find an actual way to bring to life projects. We talk a lot about invasions, the course really inspired me to do something new and unusual.
What song or album are you currently listening to?
Bastille – Wild World
Depeche Mode – Where’s the Revolution from Spirit Albom
Alice Merton – No Roots
My biggest inspirations and muses are…
I am inspired by everything, from the small talk in a pub to museums and exhibitions. But in order to develop or come up with my own project I walk, likely there is a load of parks in London. The fresh air and nature a fuel of my creativity.
What are your plans for life after your MA…
It is a rather difficult question. I would love to find internship or even a proper job in London.
