On Tuesday 5 December our LCFMA18 season begins at Sadler’s Wells with MA Costume Design for Performance graduates showcasing their garments and accompanied performances in what is traditionally one of the most moving and visually captivating parts of the MA season. We spoke to Kosovian designer Hana Zeqa ahead of the show to find out how morphogenesis inspired her garments, why jungle music is motivational and Bjork is an endless source of inspiration.

Tell us about your final project…
My project is based on emotions and imagination of the physical shape. It’s called ‘Morphogenesis of Emotions’ and is an idea of a hypothetical merger of emotional processes and their reactions in our body, with biological development of shape formation, known as morphogenesis. The latter is used as a theoretical expression of emotions in physical shape, interpreted through the costume as the main tool.
This project is in collaboration with MA Interaction Design student Betty Zhang from LCC, whom I met at the Creative Dance Technology Lab workshop at LCF. She will be integrating motor sensors into the costume through programming. We were both interested in exploring the possibilities of manifesting organic functions in cooperation with technology as a powerful mechanism in interactive design and performance. As we are both graduating at the same time, we thought it was a great opportunity to use each other’s knowledge to create this project.
What would be your top tips for new students…
If you are new to London, take your time to digest how dynamic it is and don’t lose your focus. Time management is the most important thing and trusting what you know.

What made you chose LCF and London…
I was interested in the course for a long time before I felt ready to apply. It was corresponding with my idea of non-traditional, unconventional costume-making and experimentation with multimedia.
What were the highlights and biggest challenges of your course…
The highlight was developing my skills and the collaborative project. The biggest challenge was the intensity and time management.

What song or album are you currently listening to?
Old school drum n bass and jungle mixes have been on repeat for a few weeks now. But today I’m listening to the new Charlotte Gainsbourg song, so now I’m stuck at the other extreme.
My biggest inspirations and muses are…
I think Bjork’s visual interpretation was a big influence in my development as an artist, which made me explore other creators of the same nature. Generally, I get inspired by random daily elements on the streets and people’s behaviour.
What are your plans for life after your MA…
Exploring wearable technology and costume in relation to other media. Oh, and going back to making music.
LCF is moving east. What do you think about the move…
I guess it will be nice to have one big campus, being able to see the work of other courses and collaborate easier.
