We caught up with Den Bougouffa, BA (Hons) Fashion Pattern Cutting student, to tell us about her time at London College of Fashion, UAL, placement experience at Alexander McQueen, and what advice she'd give to future students.

What initially attracted you to pattern cutting, and why did you choose LCF to study it?

I was initially drawn to pattern cutting because of the unique balance between creativity and technical precision. I’ve always been fascinated by how a two-dimensional pattern can be transformed into a three-dimensional garment. Pattern cutting feels like the architecture behind fashion, it’s where design ideas truly take form through structure, proportion and craftsmanship.

I chose London College of Fashion because of its reputation for technical excellence and its strong connection to the industry. The BA (Hons) Fashion Pattern Cutting course is highly specialised, which really appealed to me, and studying in London offers incredible exposure to the global fashion industry.

How important is garment construction knowledge when working at luxury level?

Garment construction knowledge is fundamental when working at a luxury level. In high-end fashion, the internal structure, balance and fit of a garment are just as important as the visual design.

A strong technical understanding allows you to translate creative concepts into beautifully constructed garments while maintaining precision and craftsmanship. At luxury houses, every detail matters, and technical expertise is essential in achieving the level of quality expected.

Can you describe your role and day-to-day responsibilities in the atelier at Alexander McQueen?

During my placement in the atelier at Alexander McQueen, I work closely with the pattern cutting team and support the development of garments throughout different stages of the process. My responsibilities include creating and adapting patterns, preparing pattern pieces for sampling, and assisting in the development of toiles.

I’m also involved in supporting fittings and making technical adjustments to patterns where needed. Working within the atelier has allowed me to contribute directly to the garment development process while learning from highly experienced pattern cutters in a luxury environment.

What was it like seeing your pattern cutting skills applied within a global luxury brand?

It has been incredibly inspiring to see the pattern cutting skills I’ve developed during my studies applied within a global luxury brand like Alexander McQueen. Being able to create patterns and then see them evolve through toiles, fittings and final garments is a very rewarding experience. It's also given me a deeper appreciation for the level of craftsmanship, precision and attention to detail that defines luxury fashion.

What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned whilst on placement?

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the importance of precision and patience within the pattern development process. Even the smallest adjustments can significantly impact the fit and overall silhouette of a garment.

Working within the atelier has also highlighted how collaborative the process is — designers, pattern cutters and machinists all work closely together to refine each garment to the highest standard.

What has been your most enjoyable experience?

One of the most enjoyable aspects has been being actively involved in the pattern development process and seeing garments evolve from initial patterns into finished pieces. Watching that transformation is incredibly rewarding as a pattern cutter.

Being surrounded by such skilled professionals in the atelier has also been a truly inspiring environment to learn and grow within.

How has this placement developed your confidence as a pattern cutter?

This placement has greatly developed my confidence as a pattern cutter. Working within a professional atelier environment has allowed me to see how the technical skills I’ve developed at university translate directly into industry practice.

Observing fittings, developing patterns and participating in the garment development process has strengthened both my technical knowledge and my confidence in applying these skills.

How has the experience influenced your career ambitions?

The experience has reinforced my ambition to pursue a career within the luxury fashion industry, particularly within technical development and pattern cutting.

Seeing the level of craftsmanship and expertise involved in creating garments at this level has inspired me to continue refining my skills and contributing to the development of high-quality fashion in the future.

What would you say to someone considering studying pattern cutting?

Pattern cutting is an incredibly rewarding field if you enjoy both creativity and technical problem-solving. It allows you to play a crucial role in transforming design ideas into real garments.

It requires patience and attention to detail, but the technical skills you develop are invaluable and highly respected within the fashion industry.

In what ways do you feel this course helped you secure a placement at Alexander McQueen?

The course provides a strong technical foundation in garment construction and pattern development, which I believe played a key role in securing my placement.

The emphasis on precision, craftsmanship and technical discipline prepares students well for working within professional ateliers. These are qualities that are highly valued within luxury fashion houses such as Alexander McQueen.
