Alice Grace

Sproxton Award for Photography - 2015 winner

Alex Grace is a London-based visual artist working with photography, moving image and sculpture. Alice is a graduate of MA Photography at London College of Communication and 2015 winner of the Sproxton Award for Photography.

The 2015 judges: Shoair Mavlian (Tate Modern) and Sayako Sugawara (MA Photography graduate 2013).

Artist statement

‘Sugarcandy Mountain,’ a fairytale phrase evoking a pleasant image even if one is unfamiliar with George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’ indirectly and ironically references death.

Interested in the ‘double mimesis’ which occurs when combining two or sometimes three modes of representation, these being the taxidermy object, the still photograph and the moving image,

Alex employs humour to critique these representations alongside questioning where these ‘trophies’ belong. As it is impossible to separate the object from its referent the work cannot help but also critique our relationship with the animal.
