With access to the V&A’s world-leading collections and teaching from a range of academics, curators and museum professionals, this course will explore the deep connection between fashion cultures and the stories that they tell.

On this course you will engage in detailed, object-based study, using fashion collections as indicators of lived experiences and social worlds, and a means to understand the centrality of storytelling to cultures of fashion and dress.

Our collaboration with the V&A gives you the opportunity to learn directly from specialist V&A staff , helping you understand the role that museums play in shaping historical and contemporary fashion narratives. You will benefit from sustained access to collections at the V&A, including those not currently on display in the V&A’s galleries, displays and exhibitions.

MA Fashion Storytelling provides two distinct study pathways to choose from.

Fashion Curation

This pathway provides a theoretical and practical grounding in fashion curation for museum contexts. You will build skills in building, managing and caring for museum collections, researching and interpreting fashion objects and exhibition planning and design. With guidance from the V&A and the Centre for Fashion Curation at LCF, you will learn how to develop and deliver innovative curatorial projects while developing your own critical positionality. You will engage closely with the ethics of conservation and the preservation of fashion stories.

Through live projects in collaboration with V&A East Museum, V&A East Storehouse and LCF Cultural Programming, you will curate displays and co-organise events and exhibitions in public settings, for diverse audiences.

You will also have the opportunity to learn alongside your peers on the Fashion Cultures and Histories pathway, cultivating a rigorous understanding of global fashion histories and fostering critically informed debate.

Fashion Cultures and Histories

On this pathway, you will use an interdisciplinary approach to the theoretical analysis of fashion as a key marker of social and cultural change, and a way to understand the relationships between individuals and communities. Critical thinking sits at the heart of the course which also responds to shifts in the fashion industry and the challenges posed by the climate emergency.

You will work closely with the V&A as a critical site for storytelling and will develop professional skills in research and communicating fashion knowledge for a range of audiences. You will learn advanced research skills that will allow you to reflect and articulate fashion knowledge within professional and academic contexts, generating new thinking about fashion.

You will also have the opportunity to learn alongside your peers on the Fashion Curation pathway, cultivating a rigorous understanding of global fashion histories and fostering critically informed debate.
