As part of this year’s London Design Festival, London College of Communication invites the public to an engaging series of free design events.
Between the 5 September – 14 October, visitors can explore the visual data-scape of London’s SE1 postcode, celebrate iconic sci-fi film set design, learn how service design can shape the future, enjoy graphic design by Ivan Chermayeff, reflect on design ideas for the greater good and take part in makers’ workshops. The diversity and inventiveness of LCC’s design research will also be showcased.

SE1 Data Stories
14 September – 14 October
With London College of Communication at the heart of what is a major regeneration of the SE1 postcode, SE1 Data stories visualises the changing face of the area over the last 100 years and reveals the human stories behind the data.
The Joy of Sets x The Kubrick Archive
14 September – 14 October
Science fiction meets design fiction in this film set design exhibition reimagining an iconic scene from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, with select material from UAL’s Stanley Kubrick Archive, housed at LCC. Visitors can also take part in a space walk and sci-fi film seminar as part of this event.
Design Research
14 September – 14 October
Celebrating the diversity of design research at LCC, this exhibition showcases the research interests and outputs of over 60 members of staff. See things through the eyes of experts from across visual communication, digital cultures, historical and cultural contexts and design for services and enterprise.
Ivan Chermayeff: Cut and Paste
5 September– 1 October
Ivan Chermayeff, co-founder of one of America’s leading graphic design companies, has created brand identities for global corporations. This colourful and playful exhibition of posters and accompanying talk by Chermayeff himself, focuses on his more personal practice and passion for design and typography.
Service Design Futures
16 September, 4-8pm
Service Design Futures showcases the game-changing work that service designers are doing across London. Guests are invited to participate in a line-up of free interactive activities, discussions and workshops throughout the evening.
Design. What is it good for?
14 September – 14 October
Exploring issues such as social responsibility, ethics and personal accountability, emerging creatives from across the world have questioned ‘Design. What is it good for?’ in this poster design and manifesto exhibition.
Elephant Press
14 September – 14 October
A show of prints by 20 recent graduates, alumni and Saturday Print Club members who have used the College’s extensive print facilities to develop their work including examples of etching, solar plate, relief, serigraph and screenprint.
Makers’ Workshops
17 – 24 September
LCC staff, students, alumni and local creatives will run a series of free makers’ workshops, including printmaking, filmmaking and 3D projections. Open to all
Digital Ink
Monday 19 September, 10am-2pm
LCC Studio, Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre, First Floor
Digital Ink combines traditional print processes and technological design to create interactive print using conductive ink, programmed as a touch sensor. Combining letterforms and touch, workshop participants will craft 2D and 3D objects which generate audio, tactile and visual interactions between graphics and paper. Book a place.
Making Treads
Tuesday 20 September, 10am-2pm
LCC Studio, Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre, First Floor
Layer up multiple colours and learn the basics of relief printing using bicycle tyres, inking up wheels and printing patterns. Join printmaker Daniel Mather to create a unique hand printed image using bicycle parts. Book a place.
Film Walk: The Elephant’s Tale
Thursday 22 September, 10am-2pm
Meet at Reception, LCC
Use your smartphone to experiment with filmmaking and capture the spirit of LCC’s neighbourhood and community, Elephant and Castle. Explore place-making and storytelling through film, and learn how to create your own journey and map of the area during this hands-on filmmaking workshop. Book a place.
3D Projection Mapping
Saturday 24 September, 10am-4pm
Well Gallery, LCC
Using videos and images participants will learn how to project content on to 3D models and structures, bringing them to life through colour, movement and shape using Resolume software. Run by MoreEyes working in collaboration with UAL’s Stanley Kubrick Archive and installation artist Joseph Popper, the workshop will see full scale prototypes of sci-fi film sets transformed using the projected visuals. This workshop is linked to LCF at LCC //The Joy of Sets x The Kubrick Archive exhibition. Book a place.
